description:
“Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.” – Vicki Harrison
Learning to swim amidst grief is a necessity for movement. In this one-hour, online workshop, we’ll explore movement in the form of a meditation, a mode of transformation, and a creative force for healing. We’ll both honor and express our grief—individually and collectively—by tuning into how grief shows up in our bodies and then learning how we can creatively move through it from the inside out. Through visualization, guided movement, embodied listening, a short film, and written reflection we’ll come together to experience new ways of expressing and processing grief.

Instructor Bio
J'aime Morrison, PhD, is a professor of movement at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches dance, expressive movement, and somatic theory as well as stages multi-disciplinary experimental productions. She holds a PhD in Performance Studies from New York University and was a faculty Fulbright scholar in movement in Lisbon, Portugal. J’aime has taught master classes in dance and movement in Lisbon, Shanghai, Dublin, Belfast, London, Los Angeles, and New York City. With Mourning Surf, she turns her attention to grief and the body, specifically how grief is expressed physically and how movement is an essential part of the grieving and healing process. For the international organization, Hope for Widows, J’aime developed a series of expressive movement workshops offered via Zoom throughout the pandemic and she continues to build on this work by facilitating movement for grief workshops in collaboration with Camp Widow and TwoCan Retreats as well as private coaching sessions. J’aime's award-winning experimental film, Upwell, is a meditation on loss and hope seen through the lens of two embodied practices she holds dear: surfing and dance.
